the method posted down below just works fine for now make a shortcut of MKW.exe -> right-click on the shortcut -> properties -> tab shortcut -> target: PathToYourGame:\MedievalKingdomWars\MKW.exe -dev86 just put a space and -dev86 at the end and it will work
Just a heads up for anyone in late 2019, this is impossible to play without having the official steam version, idk if it's sneaky DRM or just an idiot oversight by retarded slav devs, but the game will not go to the menu screen if it detects an out of date version, and it won't run if it's offline, it gives you a message saying the version is out of date and needs to be updated, and when you click the button it force closes the game.

For those of you who experience the problem with the exe's not working and you missed the earlier comments, this is what you should do:
Open the editor.exe
From file, click Open
From there, go to your Medieval Kingdom Wars game directory then go to scenario and select any of the test maps
Open the map and when it loads, click the Test Scenario button. It's the one with a green triangle.
When you're in game, press ESC then click Main Menu screen and you should be good to go. I want to play this game but for some reason I have a graphics glitch and the logo and everything else just looks bad than what I've seen in some gameplay videos.

when you closed the game, I can load the my 『game save' after 2nd time to start the game, but can't select any units even buildings after loaded.
when you delete your game save file 『Campaign1~9』 from 『USER\AppData\Local\mkw. But it's doesn't help, you still need to delete 『local_saved_data' to let game recognize you're a new player, then you can start to play as new Campaign. However you still need to do this way every time after you closed the game to enjoy (finger quotes) the game.
This way could let you play as many time as possible as a 『new player', but you never can have your own game save. ps. I hope my 2 days research could help game crack a lot bit (cross fingers).
This is what i did to get it working open editor.exe then click file then open go to Scenario in the file then click open blank testmap.dofbak then after map loads click test scenario the green arrow on top then hit esc and you should have the option to go to main menu then you can play working for me if you follow above hope it helps
This method works 100%, even tho its a really weird way of doing it. game is way more complex than i imagined which is awesome. Gonna keep an eye on this an try to learn the game cause ill probs end up buying it.
The .exe for the editor does work. Click test scenario in the editor. Then press escape (esc). Click main menu. Now you have to choose a name and language. after that your in the main menu of the game.
