You suck at it, or you chose a terrible starting seed. Making a hat the moment you get the option to fixes heat, by the time it gets cold you should be far enough along to make better clothes.
As far as food, you'll pick up a LOT of sweet potatoes that will keep you going well into the game.
The only struggle I found is how boring it is and how bad the building mechanics are.
I had the same issue, here's how I fixed it: If you pay attention, there's a file that says that you should start the game by launching "Launcher.bat" but I did not have that file so I assumed it was an error but after having your issue I ran a "force recheck" on the torrent I used to download the game and then I got all the files including "Launcher.bat". After using that file it works.
There is English support via the English interface and English subtitles.
