The Steam Edition was not a remaster because it didn't overhaul the graphics - it was a patch for the original 2009 PC release of the game that began development after Nordic Games acquired the rights from the bankrupt THQ. It went into beta in November 2014 and was finalised in December 2014; it removed GFWL (Games For Windows Live) and integrated the game into Steamworks for DRM and multiplayer, updated DirectX 10 support to DX11 (not necessarily a graphical upgrade), added some new Wrecking Crew maps, achievements and fixed a bunch of bugs. When the patch was finalised, the game was released on the Steam store for the first time under the name "Red Faction: Guerrilla Steam Edition". People who owned the retail copy of the game could get a free Steam key if they provided proof of purchase.

The Re-Mars-stered Edition is a remaster in that it has all-new textures, enabling the game to render natively at up to 4K resolutions, along with other graphical enhancements such as specular maps.
