What you described is sort of like the "filler" story arcs that were aired before the "main" story arcs in the "Bleach" or "One Piece" anime that may or may not also be available in the original manga! It may have been originally intended as a "Marketing" ploy to increase revenue but some people actually enjoyed the "filler" material as well! π π π π
