Do I need to read that novel to understand the game and it´s story?

I've never feel that conflicted about a game.
Some parts are extremely good, other parts are very bad...
A big waste of nice production overall.
I really, really love the mix of 2D and 3D graphics in this game, it works well, and characters portraits are all lovable.(I don't like the skull hairclip of the main character though lol)
Someone on Steam was complaining about the walking animations, but well it was even worse in 90s 2D RPGs, so I'm fine with it.
If anything, the fact that this game looks like it could have been made in the 90s is a positive thing for nostalgic people like me. lol
Music is pleasant and has a feelgood tone, and like somebody was saying on Steam, the battle music sounds like it came right out of the Naruto anime, mixing Japanese instruments and electric guitars.
I didn't encounter that many bugs, unlike the vast majority of people on Steam.
(Lots of people are actually bashing the game for having major gamebreaking bugs! You might be lucky like me and encounter none though.)

Balancing problems though, yeah...
Even right from the start, some fights can end up with your death sooner than what you think... And then, other fights are just boringly easy.
Speaking of which, every fight feels samey... This cards system is shown as revolutionary and all, but you just click on the best available cards during a fight and usually don't have to worry about any kind of tactics.
Fights are pretty much straight-forward.
I also have to say that EVERY attack has an animation, which is ALWAYS the same, whatever choice you make, and it's UNSKIPPABLE.
Ok, I realize that it was the case also in Shining Force(1993), one of the greatest rpgs of all-time, on Sega Megadrive, but the difference is that Shining Force is
RPG/STRATEGY.
Here, you can't move your characters at all on the "battlefield".
On one hand, it feels relaxing cos it's so... CASUAL.
On the other hand, you're just yawning.
Really, the only big problem is boredom. Incredible boredom.
Graphics might be great (just my opinion lol), they're also not very diverse.
There's very little to explore, and the world you're evolving in doesn't feel alive at all.
Enemies are more or less the same all the time, and battle music, despite being good, is also ALWAYS the same.
Dialogues and storyline are... huh well, it's so uninteresting that I forgot about it all. lol
A guy was saying that he even forgot the main characters names... I admit... XD
The more you play, the more you realize it was a simple mobile game.
I was mentioning 90s rpgs... Well, any PS1/Saturn RPG is infinitely more interesting than this.
It has to be pointed out that the game is completely abandoned by the developers and got NO patches at all...
So, boring fights, insignificant storyline and dialogues, one-dimensional characters, very little world, very short gameplay time, few songs...
Trulon does very nicely the little it does... But it's just not enough.
The whole thing feels either very lazy, or maybe the developers had a VERY short deadline and were asked to make a RPG in just a week...
Verdict: Meh...? lol
Alternatives: THOUSANDS of them. But if I had to choose some games which really look similar, I would pick some PSP games.
Many of them have been ported to PC, and they're on IGG! :)

You could also try some Dreamcast games, like...

Or Gamecube! lol
Tales of Symphonia =>

There are many more, but anyway you can't go wrong with these. 😋
(I prefer to play them with emulators though, because of quicksaves, filters, ease of use in general. PC versions usually have very little benefits. Your choice!)
Have fun!
