If you know the basics of programming a game. Skip straight to Unity or Unreal. If you want to actually learn build your own engine. If you want to focus on gameplay don't rebuild what has already been built. Unreal, Unity, godot isn't bad either. RPG Maker I would completely ignore.

Guys, download GameMaker or other similar tool, create a few simple games and have more fun then just playing simulation about creating games. :-)

Nice try in promoting some shitty software. Completely off topic and everything.

But Engines like Gamemaker, RPG Maker or Unity aren't shitty. It's the devs that decide to create shitty games.
Corpse party, Ib and Omori were made with RPG Maker.

Crashlands, Undertale, Nuclear Throne, Fran Bow, Please don't touch anything and Hotline Miami were all made with Game Maker.

Cuphead, Risk of Rain 2, Escape from Tarkov, Hollow Knight, Rust, Subnautica and Firewatch were all made with Unity.

Sure, these engines are not good to design triple A games. But that's the case here. People who are interested in developing games should rather use one of the simple engines above to get into game developing instead of playing such a trashy game.

Because I'd rather spend 50 hours in RPG Maker than 5 Hours in Game Dev Masters.

If you want to actually learn build your own engine, learn C++ and use SDL/SFML or for 3D (or 2D really) OpenGL/DirectX. If you want to focus on gameplay don't rebuild what has already been built. Unreal, Unity, Godot isn't bad either and continues to improve. RPG Maker I would completely ignore along with construct and game maker/

Thanks for hints! I have started experimenting with Unity and RenPy.

If I recall RenPy is for novel book games. If that interest you it never hurts. Python is a great language to learn. Not so much for games, but you can make plenty of light games.

If you like Unity you are going to need to learn C#. Technically, you don't need to know C# to make a game using unity and can use blueprints. But it is used for the scripting. I suggest YouTube and if you really are interested buy some courses at Udemy. Be sure to only buy them on their sales which is $9.99 to $12. You can also find some free ones. Never spend more than that or you are overpaying, since the courses pretend to go for $120 and crap, but are $9 to $12 the next day.

Take care, best of luck.
