version 50.3 is only minor bug fixes and is not worth the hassle and only if you want to be seen as legit if you are a streamer/uploaded - there is no real extra content yet, also the reason many games are slow to update...
Besides - if you REALLY are dying to play this game legit it is free on the bay12 website - the only reason for charging for a steam release is so one of the brothers can get health insurance and treatment for cancer
The steam version and the version you're talking about are completely different. The ORIGINAL dwarf fortress that has ASCII graphics and no mouse support, is free.
The steam version has a completely different UI and graphics.
There are mods to add graphics and mouse support to that version, too; you just have to do it yourself. The steam release's big benefit is making it more accessible out of the box the same way the community Lazy Newb Pack sought to, while also finally rewarding these guys for their crazy labor of love.
Indeed they are different. Though from what I hear he plans on eventually updating the free version to be the same as well as porting the missing free version features to the steam version. Essentially merging both versions. At that time there will be no need to get the steam version from this site anymore. Though imo if you can afford it I would throw some cash at the devs, either through steam or donations. These kinds of devs should be supported at every opportunity.
I dont know what you heard, but they are never going to make the steam version free. They never said that, they dont even want it to go on sale for the next year. I believe they are updating the original ASCII version, but there will also be the original vanilla available to download.
Ok so maybe the graphical ui stuff won't come to classic (i don't feel like looking up where I read it so lets just call it mere hearsay). However it is a fact that they intend to continue updating and releasing new content for the free version. This you can find right on the official website on the Development page.
The very reason a lot of us never touched DF before was because we were intimidated by the ancient ASCII graphics and no mouse support. Preaching here to buy games is essentially a void effort. With all due respect.
A game that has been in development for free for 20 years is a scam? You can still download the original with texture packs FOR FREE. It has a fuckton of content all for FREE. I don't give a damn if you pirate the game but for fucks sake don't call one of the best indie devs in the industry a "scammer".
If it's the same, why use the pirated version? The UI have been completely redone. The graphics and music are fare above any other tileset you could use before. And finally, this is a way to reward the dev for their 15+ years of creating DF. Stop this. Nothing is free in the world, and even if people don't ask for money, they did put their time (or their life for those brothers) into the dev. Don't buy it if you don't like it but keep this hate for yourself, please.
The dev said he needed the money cause he and his brother recently had a "no health insurance" scare that could've gotten him bankrupt yet he's still making one version free for all and updating both I think this is one of the few games where it's better to buy than "permanently demo" it no matter the cost
The uploaded version has an unpatched PE timestamp so DFhack does not recognize the DF as a legitimate version and does not work ( additional underhand DRM)
Wow in development since 2002! the 1st alpha version was released in 2006 14 years in development way to stick it out! Most developers just quit or say it's done and move to the next game.
Hi guys. I would like to try the game before buying it, but I can't get this cracked version to work. When I click on "Dwarf fortress.exe" nothing happens. Has anyone had the same thing and found a solution?
