From what I read, there's no concise explanation outside of a few hints and theories.
One major theory is the name of the game itself. In Zulu, it means "many effects/events" which definitely is spot on when talking about the game. And, if we're going by the name itself, it's South African in origin. That would explain the markings, animals, and even the ominous drum sounds whenever someone is close to the cursed game.
But as to knowing why this game is enchanted is another thing entirely. Some say that it was done by a witch doctor, some say it was done by a trickster god to "entertain" those who are bored with their lives.
TL;DR: This franchise is going on zombie outbreak origin logic to make it more mysterious and interesting.
Personally speaking, if I'm that desperate to play a game that warns me that possible deathis a thing just so I can relieve my boredom, I'll personally buy my own straight jacket.
Thanks a lot for that well written explanation. You're right, the less something is known, the more ominous. I think it was lovecraft who said "The oldest emotion is fear, and the greatest fear is that of the unknown" or something like that.
much luv , plus rep
