Regarding this game itself, I think the developers knew full well it was going to cause controversy, the subject is not that deep anyway (either you take one stance toward the topic or the other, end of story), but negative publicity is still publicity and sales are sales.
Cannot comment on the game itself yet, might try it later and point out how good/bad the actual atmosphere is, philosophy aside.

This is a fine game, made by the same people who made other fine games this is a 15-30min badly made game jam ripoff of a 10-years-old fine game with a lgbtqp+++ (the "p" is for pedophiles) skin draped over it to deflect criticism its also the only game on steam from that developer.

While they've tried to put themselves with other lgbtq+ communities, from what i've seen they've been vehemently rejected, because there's a big difference between changing oneself's expression and taking advantage of minors.
Finally, I'll try to answer your last question, that while yes, it doesn't harm the game creators, it can be offensive to the game's target audience, that is mostly lgbtq+ gamers, that want to try out games that can relate to them on such matters, or just learn more about the subject, and seeing multiple people crapping on the CONCEPT of lgbtq+ isn't really productive, especially when they can just ignore what they don't like if it doesn't harm them in anyway.
