Not to argue but the thing is that it's way easier to make an "anime style" look decent and enjoyable (to the eyes, not the gameplay, understand here "fun to look" and "fapable") than 3D human-like If you're not massively good (like tripla A grade) at 3D modeling you will just make something that look absurd and laughable.
So people are more prone to try it out for fun if it has this anime looking model, not only "weeb"
Which old days ? Anime-looking shity game was always a thing, it always has been there and 1 out of 2 game (even 80% of p*rn one) were anime looking. The only difference between "yesterday" and "today", is that steam allowed all the crap to be brought to you on a single platform (and then beeing uploaded here) instead of beeing put on various Flash Website like ArmorGames
