you can change the language: Wonder Boy Asha in Monster World\MW4_Data\Plugins\x86_64" modifying the file "steam_emu.ini". Regarding your joystick not recognizing you, I don't know what to tell you ... but you can also play with the keyboard, don't be fooled by the little sign.
You have to enter the file (following the steps above) you will open the block of notes, download and where it says "Language" change to the language you want, give it to save as on your desktop, copy it and replace it.

I downloaded it and I was able to verify that it can be played with a keyboard. I don't know if it has to do with the fact that whoever cracked it somehow managed to enable it.

I did put a 'thumbs up' since it's an interesting topic of discussion, but honestly I don't mind the 3D (or 2.5D) when it comes to remaking 2D games. And I am relatively satisfied with this remake. In fact, I do appreciate remakes/remasters that take more liberty and risks when they attempt to recreate older games. I believe (and I am aware this may not be a popular opinion) that if an old game is still run-able on modern hardware, even if by utilizing some workarounds, there is no real need for duplicating it with slightly better graphics and more concentrated pixels. But if you are gonna try that, it's better to do your darndest to enhance the experience as best as your imagination lets you. You may fail, and the game may turn out to be a flop, but at least it's something new. At least, you have tried your hand at innovation, rather than repetition. But hey, that's just what I think ... which often turns out to be very naรฏve.
Sometimes its the style of graphics that allow a game to retain its charm. I've seen games that tried to do a remake, but they changed the graphical style which was half of the selling point of the original. You are right that there are people who would go "if its not graphically improved, it sucks". Sometimes a graphical remake is warranted, sometimes its best not to mess with something that worked. There's no hard and fast rule on which is the better option. You have to weigh each game on its own merit on whether it needs a graphical update or not.
It just feels incredibly stiff... Like, the Alex Kidd remake didn't rub me bad like this one did. and it's cool you can switch back and forth between the styles when you want. But these companies thinking that they need to put more fidelity into stuff because its new and shit... Well, you can't really make 16bit look more detailed and keep it bit styled.
