The most recent game spiderweb released was good as well. I can't rememeber the whole name but you basically play a spoiled prince who gets sent off to some country to either regain control for your mothers empire or to turn the country against your mother. Your mother is the queen, and your two older siblings don't do a damn thing to help you. Focuses on resource managment and rebuilding outpost/forts. More management than rpg in my opinion, but still good.
I've played a couple of hours of this so far, never having played any of the original games in series in the past. I feel ashamed of myself for not knowing about this for this long. This is so far one of most enjoyable games I've played in the 'lead your very own monster companions' genre. Very fun.
Welcome to the club! I discovered these fantastic RPGs only very late in life, and fell in love instantly. They remind me of Baldur's Gate, with worse graphics. Maybe I even prefer the combat system. I have been buying and playing Spiderweb games since the beginning. I remember it was only one guy originally. As a matter of fact, I've bought more of their games than I have from any other developer/publisher. My favorite of all time is Nethergate. The Avernum series 1-3 seem to be remakes of the Exile series 1-3 so I haven't played those. I played Geneforge 1 & 2 but it was so long ago I think I'll take a stab at Mutagen. I'm so glad you two discovered Spiderweb. You're a couple of my favorite people on this discussion board. Y'all know your history.
I was going write a special thank you comment in a few days under your original post here, for introducing me to Spiderweb Software and their games. I'm already about 50 hours in and every step of the day I'm fully reminded of the era when devs actually cared about their games; when graphics wasn't the end-all be-all. I like almost everything about this so far. And the fact that combat has some tactical element to it removes the game from the (usually repetitive) turn-based lot. I also downloaded the first Avernum and Avadon games immediately after I tested Geneforge. They are sitting pretty in the waiting room ;) So, a heartfelt thank you <3 And may you come across fantastic games you never knew of.
Thank you for pointing this out. And I found this review of Nethergate on Steam. I don't know whether I should take it as a poem of triumph or a cautionary tale. Either way if this doesn't make one want to play a game, I don't know what will!
The original game is 20 years old, the engine cannot be magically tweeked in a radical way. And frankly any spiderweb game's graphics are fine because once you launch them you're screwed and glued to your monitor for at least 60 hours :p

By the way, for those who wonder, yes, it does look and feel MUCH better now. At least now it looks almost like 90s RPGs, but slightly worse than Baldur's Gate, for example. The original game is still good, but in my opinion, you shouldn't even bother, play this one instead!
What adblocker are you using? if it's uBlock Origin then open uBlock Origin's Options (right click the extension icon and choose options) go to Filter Lists click Purge all Caches and then click Update. After that you should have no problems with MegaUP. Not sure about other adblockers, for me uBlock origin is the best one.
If you need to use megaup, then disable your adblocker, refresh the page, click on the create download link.. if it says something about install some program, then it's malware or something virus related..refresh the page and try again until it says download geneforge.1.mutagen.rar, then it's legit. Otherwise, just use another download source.
I played the original. What's different about this aside from higher res and slightly better graphics? Is it expanded from the original, or enhanced in some way?
It's a remaster of the first game of the Geneforge Saga. It's better than the original game in almost everything, It's a great remastered, They add little things to the story and make it's game mechanics better. after all, it's just a remastered, not a remake.
uhm weirdly enough my download got corrupted will try to check this again in around 12/13h depending on what rises up, will edit the comment EDIT: The long awaited edit, took me a while, i'm only in for a quarter or so of an hour, can say two things if you dont like reading it's not a game for you nor is it if you like only fancy graphics, it's a pretty interesting game, no idea how long it is espc cause i'm a slow gamer lol
