Kinda feels like this game was a bit ahead of its time.

I can't find which file is responsible for naming me "Shinji" in game. Trying to play with my friend and we're called Shinji and (1)Shinji, it's super lame.

Did you install the english translation patch?
The english translation for this game is very bad. The mod / patch improves it.
