Back in the day when you had to buy it first just to try it, you only had so much money. If you might have got ripped off for the money you had available on some flashy junk, maybe you never got a chance to discover BETTER less PUSHED efforts. If you could try everything first, and then reward the best with a buy, it would shift the nature of any platform or industry from monopolies and promotion over content, to raising the bar and the best content.
