One of the first games i got on my good old 4/86 SX25 back in the day. And one of the first horror games that i bought. As a kid i was terrified by this and sometimes really had to force me to play or open a door etc. :) But i think i pass, it wasn't really that good but back then there wasn't that much choice.
I actually have the Big Box on my shelves and intent to play it on my Retro PC. Back in the day, I never even had the thought of getting it even though I'm a RPG fan. Played Elvira 1 on C64 and read about Jaws of Cerberus and Waxworks but can't remember seeing much coverage about Legacy. Realms of the Haunting is a game I always wanted to get but never did so until 2 years ago. Of cause, it's not really a RPG but still gives me the same vibe as Elvia, Waxworks and Legacy.
Cant say much about those games you mentioned, but back then without the internet to stay informed about game releases there were so many games that one just did never hear of. I remember another game that freaked the shit out of me then. Phantasmagoria. edit: and most gaming magazines didnt cover any games that were not child-friendly then. Weird if you think about it because most early gamers were adults. I really had the luck that my father was interested in gaming and so he bought me that computer, comparing the price back then to now i think it was the most expensive rig i ever owned. :)
The mags I read were quite good and meant for late teens and adults. Phantasmagoria wasn't my cup of tea as I didn't and still don't like FMV games. Often the acting is also cheesy or plain bad in these. Hell, even the cutscenes in Wing Commander 3 and 4 were cheesy, while featuring multiple Hollywood stars. xD Except for Realms of the Haunting (1st person shooter / horror / adventure) all the games I mentioned were from the early 90s with Waxworks being the latest (92). The Legacy looks a bit sterile with it's render graphics and digitised looking characters. Also the colours look washed out. Lands of Lore of the same years looks far nicer even though more classical without movable UI elements.
I loved Hobbes (from WC) until they went FMV. The Kilrathi no longer looked terrifying and intimidating. They were big floofy thingies after I saw him in FMV. Now, there were a few scenes in that game where the FMV worked. Sadly, they placed it at the worst spot possible. AFter a LONG dogfight ... you had a lengthy sequence of FMVs ... where if you failed, game over. And you had to replay the ENTIRE fight. Got to the point I relied on cheat codes to make myself invulernable. Even then, that fight was no longer fun. It was tedious.
Hehe, please don't get me started on Lands of Lore. This thread would be way to small to contain my enthusiasm about it. But you are right about fmv games, they all looked tacky.
Have to replay it too. The last time I stopped after the Urbish Mines. Also really have to play through the EotB Trilogy as I only started the games but never finished them. So much to play and so little time.
Nah you can't play it bro only low settings sorry, i can play it ultra with my 5090RTX that i have yours very old now, SLI brah i have 4 5090RTX so i am cool you are out of luck pal.!!
Oh dear... one of those games. Without studying the game mechanics, it takes around 5 minutes till you are deader than disco... As much as I wanted to learn it more, but when it's the very best thing at first to find a random item, so no zombie attacks you, I don't really care anymore. ^^" It's like the best way to play "Breath of the Wild" is to find Majoras Mask. Still, it's a neat little "Resident Evil" & "RPG" hybrid, and it's surely better than "Sweet Home".
Yes with those old games it was often try and error and as horror games were often not covered by gaming magazines there was no other option than to just try it out yourself.
