To Those want to install this game in 2023 with the problem about directx 8.1... I found my solution by deleting the dbghelp.dll file on both root folders of command conquer where you install it
and by changing the resolution to 800 600 on option.ini found on document folder which a guy wrote far back down the comment section (salute to you kind sir by the way)
If not working then delete again all you install and do it again all of the above procedure now without opening the game.

To fix the update DirectX 8.1 error all you have to do is delete the "dbghelp.dll" files from each of the game folders. After this the games will run as usual

It has been a little while but I think I still remember the issue. The game uses a file that defines the settings in game (such as graphics), and the file isn't in the game files after extracting/cracking all of the stuff. (I'm gonna use CaC short for Command and Conquer) So what you're gonna need to do is create a .txt file (doesn't matter I ended up using notepad for this) and insert the settings I have below (end of this response). After pasting the info rename the .txt to options.ini. Finally, you're gonna want to located the game data, which for me and I'm pretty sure it's the same, if not, close, at This PC \ Documents (you may need to go to the user on your computer find the document). There will be 2 separate folders. One called CaC Generals Data, and another call CaC Generals Zero Hour Data. Copy and paste options.ini to both of these folders. Try to run the game now and let me know if it works. Amazing game would recommend. It does have some problems like crashing when alt tabbing or not being able to open it in fulllscreen but when it works it is a great experience!

go to Documents\Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour Data than open "options.ini" file and set the resolution settings like that "Resolution = 1024 768" or what ever you like it must be fix your problem.
The expansion gives me a directX error saying " Please make sure you have DirectX 8.1 or higher installed. Also verify that your video card meets the minimum requirement ". is it bad that i like this C&C game a whole lot more than C&C4: Tiberium Twilight which i downloaded and tried yesterday? having the majority of units, buildings, and upgrades locked behind a profile based exp system (i couldn't even figure out how to gain exp at all.) instead of simply having them available from the start might sound nice but it's pretty inconvenient. plus C&C4 has some REALLY strict limitations on the number of buildings and/or units you can have on the field at the same time. remember how in older games such as this one you had the energy bar which limits how many buildings you can have out on the field while troops/units had no such restriction? yeah...the amount of units you can have out at the same time is limited and i saw no way of raising the building/unit caps. add to that, the fact that your selection is further limited by having you choose 1 of 3 different MCVs... it's just not a good game overall. well, not a good C&C game anyway. edit: i did, however, really like how they stuck with the live action cutscenes like how westwood did in older C&C games. that's always been a good part of this franchise.

Since you've got the cracked version and your friends too, all of your friends need to download and install THE SAME COPY of the game, also if you add documents to solve some problems you have with a game (for example a .dill file) they must be the same. If you had the original game it would be easy because you have an update option, but since you don't you and your friends need to synchronize on your own. Hope this helps :) .

Quite a few of the older command and conquer games will not work on windows 10, there are certain software issues that i won't go into detail with, they're simply not compatible, so you should either find yourself a windows 7 (or older) computer, or set up a virtual machine. Source: I've tried getting these games to work on windows 10 for longer than i'd like, without success.

So if it says MISSING INI in the ReleaseCrashInfo.txt well that means you need FINAL BIG Program and find INI and search it up. So I just wrote this comment to help all of you guys if you have a big problem most of the time if you have a mod you would encounter a serious error depending on the situation. Is your system bit 64-bit? If it is you may have problems running Generals. Generals is a 16-bit game. 64-bit games can only run 64-bit programs and 32-bit programs but not 16-bit.

Did everything. (64-bit system) Compared to Generals, which I've already installed 3 different mods and it's still great even set on highest quality, ZH is... only up to this point.

The reason is unknown your crack files can be found in program files and the to find the reason why it crashes go to documents then you will see a folder that says Zero Hour then a txt called Release Crash Error then click it. Well if it says Game Engine well it is unknown the game cannot be updated since EA fired the ones who made generals :(

Means you've installed and cracked the game successfully but unable to run it? Did you tried the compatibility mode? Right click launcher>Properties>Compatibility (test it)
I got problem here, the video that you posted to teach us how to install this was completely different on what i saw after i extract the files of this game. i followed the whole instruction on the notepad and still it doesn't work.
So what is the notepad says? I guess firstly you need to install the original C&C Generals, then secondly the Zero Hour. It is better if you can take a picture for both the C&C Generals and C&C Generals Zero Hour folders, to let us have a look, because I don't have this game, or you need to wait for the uploader, the IGG mod to assists.
I did like it told me in the "How to Install" document but if i open the game it only shows the launch screen but it doesnt react and the game wont open...?!

If it is you may have problems running Generals. Generals is a 16-bit game. 64-bit games can only run 64-bit programs and 32-bit programs but not 16-bit.
Installing them would fix your game, but kinda. They make your game run fine.

Right click the game then properties hit on Compatibility
then change it to Windows XP SP3. Then apply and ok.
Being a admin in your computer means you have control of your pc. Be a admin and run the game as administrator.
There are reasons why your game won't start because some errors in the file Options.ini.

So i far i tried downloading the fix v1.04 for Zero Hour and v1.8 for Generals one , I tried doing the options.ini file and its not working :(
Btw where are the crack files ?
and the to find the reason why it crashes go to documents then you will see a folder that says Zero Hour then a txt called Release Crash Error then click it.
Well if it says Game Engine well it is unknown the game cannot be updated since EA fired the ones who made generals :(

i followed the whole instruction on the notepad and still it doesn't work.
It is better if you can take a picture for both the C&C Generals and C&C Generals Zero Hour folders, to let us have a look, because I don't have this game, or you need to wait for the uploader, the IGG mod to assists.
