It would be nice if this version wasn't the GOG version so we could put mods in the game, and having the latest update that was released...

what a strange game... i absolutely love the idea and the art so i really wanted to love it but the deckbuilding elements dont feel like they really work, coming from the
perspective of someone who loves deckbuilding games. theres a few problems and im gonna try to talk about all of them, partially because ive seen posts from the devs here, so maybe they'll see it? i dont think the problems are unfixable or anything, so who knows.
the first and biggest problem is, it feels like 90% of the time the correct move when given a set of cards you can add to your deck is to pick none of them. in a deckbuilding game, building a deck is sort of the appeal, so this is a huge problem. it feels terrible to be constantly be presented with reminders that this cool mechanic of building your deck is there, but if you actually interact with it at all your deck will just become worse. its fine for this to happen sometimes, or if you're doing a specific thin deck strategy, but it should never be the default. there's a few reasons it feels like this. one is, the starting cards come from the same pool as the other cards, and are just as good as them. this is a problem slay the spire solved by giving you a bunch of shitty strikes and defends in your starting deck. as a result, just about any card you pick will increase the average quality of your deck, because it means you're less likely to draw strikes or defends, so the default case is that adding cards to your deck is incentivized. that incentive isnt here in one step from eden. i guess the idea was that the reload time when you run out of cards would incentivize having more cards, but since you have limited mana anyway, you can just regen mana while reloading. another problem is, with a hand size of 2, you're super unlikely to get any two given cards at once, so cards that combo with other cards feel not very useful. another problem is, this is an action game so execution is a big part of it. having more cards in your deck means more times you have to take 0.1 seconds to remember what that card does and what tiles it targets, and thats brain time that could be used dodging attacks, and you need that brainpower because in lategame, attacks cover like 70% of your field at all times. why have a complex deck with many cards when you could have 3 simple cards whose total mana adds up to your max mana pool, and you just instantly cast them all after reloading and then get back to focusing on dodging? also, upgrading cards is super expensive, so why not just have a deck of 3 highly upgraded cards instead of a bunch of shitty cards? (on the topic of upgrades, doublecast seems like 10x as good as any other upgrade, which is strange)
a smaller issue that isnt really a huge deal is a lot of the artifacts are either boring +max mana/+mana regen or are totally useless unless you have a very specific deck thats build to synergize with them. you pick up a lot of artifacts that dont help you at all.
outside of the deckbuilder stuff, the game is insanely hard. which i think is actually fine. it incentivizes theorycrafting to come up with good builds to meet that challenge, so if the problems with the theorycrafting side get solved, i think it would be fun to lose repeatedly while trying to beat it. the only difficulty aspect i dont like is that the bosses have different and faster movesets the later on you encounter them. its like dark souls, if you didnt get to fight the same boss repeatedly to learn their patterns because its a roguelike, and also, every time you fight them their patterns are different anyway because they're at different difficulty levels. its just quite frustrating to lose to a difficult pattern that you have no way to practice for and its gonna be different next time you encounter it anyway. i think this problem is unsolvable, though. its basically baked into the design of the game, and ultimately i can accept it as a downside of a design that also has a lot of upsides
i also think the mechanical consequences of killing vs sparing bosses are probably too impactful for how intense and emotional of a moral choice it is? its not like its objectively wrong or anything, this is just my personal feeling. it feels bad to be rewarded for killing a boss while taking almost no damage with a choice of: gain no benefit and fall behind the curve or kill a character you like
i dont mean to just like shit on the game or anything, the art is absolutely beautiful and i love the characters, which is why i have such strong feelings about these issues... i really want to like it, you know?

I'm guessing everybody saying this game is good must have not played more than 1 hour of this game and are just parroting what other people say because there is no way in hell the average person is going to have fun playing this.
I absolutely adore the Battle Network series, I also play a lot of roguelikes and particularly like Slay The Spire a lot(the roguelike this game borrows elements from) and I have to say this game fails COMPLETELY on what both those games do well, and then some.
The biggest problem is that there is no strategy in this game, if you try to build a specific deck you WILL lose 99% guaranteed, there's several reasons for this that when added up make for a terrible experience, these are as follows:

  1. The game moves too fast, the speed by itself is not ludicrous but when combined with the other issues...
  2. Your character's movement and every single one your attacks are not animated properly and have no "weight" to them, even the ones that stop you in place; it's hard to explain but just go play Battle Network(where I have 0 complaints in this regard) and you will immediately see what I'm talking about.
This ends up with you feeling like your character is a piece of paper that lasers come out
  3. The enemies attacks, while they more often that not have actual animations, still pretty much suffer from the same problem as nº2 and are, for the most part, not nearly telegraphed enough. Very often I'm surprised to see my health reduced at the end of the fight, even though I didn't see what hit me.
  4. The game expects you to constantly keep track of the attacks that you draw and order in which you draw them (which is random) and keep track of the enemies position and attacks while also dodging and positioning yourself to attack, this might seem obvious but given the speed at which everything happens no human can give the necessary attention to play this game as it was clearly intended, which bring me to...
  5. Since we are human beings in order to play this game you will have to give up on any interesting combos as they require far too much attention and management and just pick strong attacks that work by themselves, this is pretty much mandatory if you wish to beat the game.
  6. To add insult to injury, the card balance is really bad, at least as of this moment, a lot of them are meant for really specific combos but even with the proper supporting deck they are objectively worse than just having regular attacks, I made the mistake of trying a Jam build, boy what a joke; and let's not forget the card that heals the enemy to poison it(wtf srsly).
And that's basically it, I'm no stranger to challenging games like bullet hells and such and I still wouldn't call this game "BAD", but it's definitely not good.
I didn't enjoy playing this very much and I'm glad I didn't buy it but I'm also sad this game didn't live up to my expectations, as soon as I heard Roguelike MMBN I was ecstatic. Don't think I have ever been this disappointed by a game.
Oh almost forgot, PVP and Co-Op are basically unplayable, the dev addressed someone complaining about this and basically said "it's not meant to be good they're just extra features" meaning he has no intention of fixing this, gotta love "extra" broken features amirite. This is admittedly a minor issue, at least in comparison with the rest.

Guys. Of course it doesn't feel good to read comments like this, but I feel like it's a necessity. If you do read carefully on what he said, his points are firm. What if the devs would infer from comments like this and improve the game?
Give it a chance. Some folks love it means that the game has the potential.

"OP has never player a deckbuilder" my post literally starts with how I played and am a huge fan of the deck building that inspired OSFE... Are you retarded?
Dislikes keep coming in but nobody will try to argue anything I said, people have decided the game is good before even playing it because they see everybody else saying it's good.
Why do dumb people see criticism as a personal attack? Even when it's not even about them..? Wtf...
I just wanted the game to be better, I tried to like it but couldn't have fun, above are my reasons, at least read a few sentences before deciding I'm wrong, instead of writing a vague snarky comment to pretend you did.
This isn't a popularity contest.
I don't even think my review is that great and there's more I wanted to say and also could better phrase some things, but I already wasted a lot of time and I know I'm just talking to a brick wall. I just can't stand it when I barely see 1 person criticizing something with obvious flaws, just a giant crowd of parrots.
The "most helpful" voted reviews on steam are a prime example of this.
The first guy is says MMBN was too hard for him. Uh??? It's a very casual game for children, only the post game content is somewhat challenging, but somehow he likes this brutal game where I can barely use the basic mechanics? Ok...
The second review is a guy saying he has experience playing MMBN but hasn't hasn't played in 20 years.
Lol...The thing is, the first game came out 19 years ago... There's 6 of them... Not to mention the first is very unpolished.
What's happening is obvious to anybody with half a brain, these aren't reviews, these aren't even opinions, they're copying what someone else said. someone told them "this game is good because it's like battlenetwork" and they go along with it somehow, I wouldn't be very surprised if they actually never played the games.
I hate this weird, insecure attitude with a passion.
Honestly I will never be happy with this game as I think it needs very significant changes, (say, making it turn based, which I think has the potential to fix all the problems I have with the game and then some, but this isn't the only way and I realize this game isn't meant to be BN) or some other core changes, and it's not even EA so it's unrealistic for me to expect it.
But do all of you who seem to enjoy this game seriously not see the things I pointed out? If not then maybe it's just me, but I find that very hard to believe.

i for one pirated this game, and then promptly bought it. it's by and large the best deckbuilding game i've played, and i've played STS, Arkham Horror, etc. etc. Even games like Hearthstone and Legends of Runeterra. and honestly i have absolutely no idea what you mean by anything you pointed out. the game is difficult, it's meant to be that way. it emulates a specific genre - the deckbuilder stage battler that Megaman Battle Network pioneered, and it emulates it perfectly. the games back then also have seemingly insurmountable challenges, such as this game. it's meant to be that way. let me refute every single point you've made with points of my own.

  1. if the game is too fast for you, then your eyes probably just don't follow quick actions. it's common if you don't play action games, so hey, maybe it's just not for you. anybody with any experience in action games would have no issue tracking any of the action, however.
  2. not sure what this point is trying to bring, but, uh... i guess that's your opinion? i feel the exact opposite, however. every single character has their own animations and reactions to what you do and they all feel just fine and on-par with the Battle Network animations in my opinions, especially the spell/card animations.
  3. this goes back to #1. if you can't see an enemy's telegraphed attacks, especially after playing through a couple of times, you just aren't paying attention at all. the game is about learning about what each enemy does and overcoming the (admittedly, fairly easy when it comes to the normal enemies) challenge. this is coming from someone who's gone many loops in this game (endgame, basically).
  4. actually, you really don't. most of the time, unless you're using a very certain kind of deck (flow deck, for example), you just keep track of what two abilities you have at one time. when there are no attacks on your side of the field to dodge, you line up an attack and watch the enemy to hit them. when there are attacks to dodge, you watch your side of the field. simple as day. it's not rocket science.
  5. i'm sure you understand the folly of this one? you have not only made a grievous error, but you seem to lack the understanding that this is... um, a deck builder? in fact, you pretty much need to synergise your deck to succeed. take flow decks, frost decks, mana decks, trinity decks, kunai decks, among MANY many others. i'd be hard pressed and honestly shooting myself in the foot to not take synergies. like, what? relics exist for a reason.
  6. funnily enough, the game is getting patched every few days to adjust the balance. the entire Flow system got reworked a patch or two ago, and some buffs and nerfs came through for various cards, enemies, etc. in fact, the difficulty of the early game got scaled down, just for people like you, actually. lucky! i could've used that when i farmed to beat the game for the first time, but i used my skill to do such, and feel no regret.
long story short, i think you're just missing the ball here. the game is certainly not bad. in fact, it's one of the best games this year, so far, as far as i'm considered, and looking at the steam reviews, it looks like many others feel the same way. either this game isn't for you, or you need to reevaluate the way you play this game. if you liked MMBN so much, i have absolutely no idea why you'd dislike this game. maybe you just had a bad day? i for one own every single MMBN game and Starforce game (unfortunate mistake but they were still at least alright), and i could never be happier.

The card that "heals the enemy to poison it" is great for enemies already at full health! You can also hit a structure or hostage with the "healing" shot, and move to hit an enemy with the "poison" shot that comes after.
The game is a lot about figuring out exploring and inventing interesting strategies and mechanics like that. I can understand though, why these cards may seem "bad" to you at first glance!
I will certainly be improving PvP and Co-op! Lots of awesome functionality and online planned in the future :)

The freaking pace of this game! With my partner I can never get past the second stage's boss. We take way too much damage. The first stage could have easily been a suitable difficulty for a 3rd stage. There is no opportunity to learn the enemies mechanics in real time. Too many appear on the map at the same time. At least PvP is surprisingly fun.
