Murder mystery, thriller, a bit offantasy, and a bit of horror and gore. my favourite storytelling in any media so far. amazing story and characterization. play with the ps3 graphics mod if you can. This game is the sole reason why i love Visual Novel as a medium of storytelling. because this game really utilize the pro and cons of the Visual Novel medium so well. I just love the Characters and the story so much. I also love this game so much because it showcases moments of the worst AND the best of Humanity so well. True Remembrance Slice of life and a bit of scifi One of my favourite VN, simply because the story are so soothing, loving and end with a happy note. the music is good too.
Nine Persons, Nine Hours, Nine Doors (999) Murder mystery, thriller, puzzle game, scifi, and a bit of horror/gore Simply amazing story, puzzle and characters. the twist really impressed me the first time i played this. awesome use of multiple playthrough. PLay the DS version if possible, better experience than the remastered (because the game were designed to be played on 2 screens)
Ever 17 : the Out of Eternity. Murder mystery, thriller, scifi, and a bit of horror/gore also one of the reason i love Visual Novel as a medium of storytelling. Made by the same people of 999. so expect a similar feeling and similar amazing use of multiple playthrough. But i think it has better writing than 999 albeit more slowly paced. But it's worth it, especially the twist.
The Great Ace Attorney (english patched) Murder mystery, detective thriller, and a bit of puzzle gameplay. A great story and great gameplay and great characters, even better that the original trilogy of phoenix wright at least in my opinion.
KANON (all ages patch) Slice of life, and a bit of a fantasy, This is a pretty old VN so i understand if the character designs turn many people off. BUt the story is Solid good. one of the heroine's route made me cry so much. HIGHLY RECOMMEND using the all ages patch to remove the "trash". but it's your choice.
CLANNAD + CLANNAD After Story Slice of life, and a bit of a fantasy, made by the same people behind KANON. The After Story version has great story, and a great tear jerker as well.
Little Busters Slice of life, and a bit of a fantasy, made by the same people of KANON and CLANNAD so prepare to cry. the main route of Little Buster has amazing story, maybe even better than KANON and CLANNAD combined. just my opinion tho.
Steins;Gate series. Mystery, thriller, Scifi, great story, great twist, one of the most famous VNs of all time. has the same feeling of Ever 17 and 999 albeit more polished and better writing maybe ( i still prefer Ever 17 and 999 tho).
Planetarian, a Dream of a Little Star Scifi, and a bit of slice of life Made by the same people that made KANON,CLANNAD, and Little Busters. so expect quality tear jerker story. a bit short tho.
Never 7 The End of Infinity Murder mystery, thriller, scifi, Made by the same people that made Ever 17 and 999. overall good story but not amazing. not as amazing as Ever 17 and 999 but still worth recommending in my opinion.
Danganronpa series Murder mystery, detective thriller, and a bit of puzzle gameplay. It's like a combination of murder mystery set in highschool, Phoenix Wright series trial gameplay, and Shonen anime/manga tropes. has great moments, good story, pretty good twists i guess. my favourite is danganronpa V3. a bit of a warning, sadly the danganronpa series has fanservice but nothing too much. and they're not the main selling point of the game anyway. if you can get past them, there are great story to be experience
The House in Fata Morgana. Horror, thriller, mystery, and a dark fantasy This one blew my mind. Amazing story, very dark tho. deals with heavy subjects. And it's a bit of a horror too. so there may be some scary moments (mileage may vary). but overall, amazing VN with solid story, beautiful moments (and some scary and depressing too), and one of my favourite ending to a story.
Symphonic Rain Slice of life, Music, and a bit of fantasy This one is hard to recommend, because when the first time i played through each heroines route, i kinda hated it. kinda depressing. BUT the true Route and the True Ending was so good, it made so happy that i can overlook past all the bad stuff. expect brooding and a bit of depression. The music is good tho.

It's difficult to understand, for me at least, why does these characters always have that unsettling childlike/doll features, with giant breats, or not. Instead of looking like a normal person, is it personal insecurities regarding the complexity of the human appearance? I don't know. Not only that, such characters often behave in a childlike manner, too. Which is also strange. For example, the image right bellow, I saw that anime, at least the first episodes, and that character acts like a walking doll with a bare minimum of independent thought. Not only that, but it seems to gravitate towards the main character. I get it, I get it... but I don't get it. There has to be a case of lacking self-awereness, self-esteem or simply shame regarding our sexuality, and personal image, to have this featurless dolls being the object of a fantasy-driven relationship, in which we are not reflected as we are, in any way. This characters are drawn around the insecurities of people. Because they seem like the antithesis of a real person. So, is pretty hard to feel engaged in any way, because the little believability and self-honesty there is to this mental constructs. Unless one is, perhaps, trying to actively avoid reality, or is unable to understand life and oneself as we are.

Asd Asd is probably tired of vns with characters with lack of personality where the main focus is only fanservice(with good figures and boobs) ..If the vn did a great job at characters for Asd Asd.. I'm sure he'd really enjoy this one since it has good graphics.. In summary: Plot and Characters are very important for a visual novel.. specially for romance.. I'm not saying graphics isn't important because it also plays an important aspect in "VISUAL" novels
I don't think I have read a visual novel in my entire life. I don't know much about anime either. But, from my perspective, some of these products seem to be aimed or marketed at insecure young males, because of the unrealistic depiction of females. Which is why I see them as a form of self-indulgence. In my mind, this reads as escapism from oneself. Also, don't be afraid to look deeper, you may see things you don't like about yourself, but is important to know oneself. And it's difficult to know myself, when I am faced with characters that don't reflect the human nature, whether it be a female or male. It doesn't matter, as long as they are portrayed as human beings. With that said, feel free to enjoy whatever it is you like. And don't feel pity for yourself, one of the first steps towards understanding is acceptance.
All I can see is comments from people that got it in their heads that Visual Novels = Hentai or something. For someone like me that reads VNs for 10 years+ I can firmly say it's exactly the opposite. VNs are the developed stories that animes can never become since they can stretch the details trough literature endlessly. The trend is often for them to have nudity, but it's those VNs that need no nudity to stand on their own that are the best.
I didn't said they must not have that kind of content, I said it should be able to stand on it's own without that kind of content. If they think it won't get enough sales without that, then it's on them...
