They made a game on the hopes that the controversy alone would carry the game on it's back and bring in money which in the end, utterly failed. This game reminds me of "Ethnic Cleansing", an actual Nazi game made by actual Nazi skins and was produced and distributed on the now defunct White Power music label "Resistance Records" The game was also stupid, and offensive for the sake of controversy. It's not the politics or the sexual nature that makes these games so shitty, it's the game play and the lack of actually caring about gaming and trying to make a decent game. These games where built around the controversy first, then built up game play almost as an afterthought. Look at Super Columbine Massacre, controversial as fuck but it had great game play and a good story. Trying to make money off of controversy alone by making a shitty game (again, game play I am judging) and slapping edgy content to it is extremely see through. If you're going to make a game like this, pour your heart and soul into it otherwise it just comes off as desperate.

I probably won't be playing this game, but I feel like the developer is trying to make a statement. So many bad things are normalized today - and violent crime makes headlines all the time. We are taking these things for granted. It's sad - most people do NOTHING to make a change in the real world. But when someone makes a VIDEOGAME called Rape Day, there is a huge outrage. No it isn't. Australia, Argentina, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and New Zealand banned it's sale but they are all places that regularly ban games and it was stupid anyway since the game itself was never officially distributed outside Japan for sale. It's still perfectly legal to own in basically every decent country on the planet. In most places, like the US, they simply slapped an AO (adult only) rating on it and that's it. You can buy and own it no problems if you can find a copy for sale anyway Illusion doesn't produce new copies anymore thanks to the EOCS being a-holes. The funniest part is that Japan produces the overwhelming majority of "rape games" and is the largest market for them yet has one of the lowest rates of reported rape in the world. Meanwhile Australia who is super strict on them and often bans them has one of the highest.
What do you mean buy a copy? Physically? If so then they're old copies. And if it's digital, I can't see how the US wouldn't have it still either....since most of the world would be using the same websites in that respect for games. Japan also has fewer of certain crimes is simply because they're strict on it and are nicer people. (Like seriously have you seen their teenagers and gone to their schools? Actually you won't even find digital copies for sale in the US since it was never licensed for distribution outside Japan and Illusion doesn't sell it anymore so they canceled their licences with Japanese distributors for it. The only way to get a legal copy would be to find someplace that still has physical copies from before Illusion stopped making them. It's why I said while it's perfectly legal to buy or own good luck actually find a copy to buy. I've been to Japan many times and was even stationed in Camp Smedley D. Butler for a while. Sorry to burst your bubble but no they are not "nicer" people in general. They are just much more willing to put up with strict rules and will deal with a lot more shit because despite technically not being a class based society anymore they still almost are in practicality thanks to the way they act.It's why organizations like the EOCS which have no legal authority exist and have so much power.

The way it works in Japan is that private organizations like the EOCS (which are about on the level of the ESRB and have no legal authority) are set-up by the industry itself to basically self police in hopes of avoiding any problems which would cause the government itself to step in because they are more often then not very heavy handed. Back when it was big news Illusion themselves had no idea why everyone had a problem because they don't distribute outside of Japan and the game was perfectly legal there and even went through the EOCS before release as most games do. They only ended up dropping it after some western protest groups started flipping out and got Japanese politicians riled up. At that point the EOCS held an emergency meeting and decided to cut back on "rape games" in general in hopes of keeping the government off their back. As a result Illusion stopped distributing the game but maintained they did nothing wrong (it was 3 years after the game was originally made and it sold quite well in that time so the game was a big deal for them as a developer). They didn't get rid of existing copies or start ignoring that the game exists. They just stopped selling/producing new ones to appease the EOCS but any copies that were already made were still sold. You can even still find the odd copy being sold in shops in Japan now for stupidly high prices as out of print games often go for. Hell despite the whole decision by the EOCS over rape-games Illusion still went and put out games like Real Play or Play Club which are arguably worse and more graphic than Rapelay. The whole other countries banning it deal is basically a non-issue because it was never licensed for legal distribution there anyway. It isn't crossing a line when you ban a game from being sold that isn't legally being distributed there to begin with and the countries in question all have a bad habit of banning titles rather frequently anyway. I mean you have places like Thailand who typically ban any games with excessive sexual content including tons of Japanese eroge titles and Australia who does the same and even banned things like The Witcher 2 for sexual content until the side mission that featured the nudity as an incentive was removed. Places like those are one of the reasons Japanese publishers and developers pretty much just don't distribute outside Japan at all. As far as being stricter, while I was military, I was talking about the Japanese in general and not their military or the US military (which is who owns Camp Butler). I meant that the people are much more rigid in following the rules no matter how asinine or even if they are purely social standards rather than legal ones. They also tend to turn a blind eye on "criminal activity" or undesirably behaviors and often just pretend like it doesn't even exist as long as it's being done behind close doors. Also rather then "nice" I would call them respectful. The difference is they usually act that way because they are taught to or it's just in regards to social standing rather than anything personal so it's a hollow and basically a platitude. It's the same as how I treat a superior officer with respect solely because of his rank.

Well the difference is that game of thrones is somewhat grounded in reality and doesn't treat rape as this fun thing to do. It's also not the primary theme of GoT. I personally think there is a very interesting take on this game. This game puts you on the shoes of the villain. How many games out there do this? How many games out there grab the player, and put the player on the standing point of the villain, to see the perpective and point of view in-game of the villain? Yes, you can make worse things on GTA, but GTA is an action game, this is a visual novel, a story, much similar to a book. So it is a very interesting take. There are a lot of horror movies out there, but how many of them tell the story from the criminal point-of-view? The story itself may not be the best, but the effort of the developer in trying to take a different approach is definitely there, and that is something to praise. From an art perpective, it's something brutal. And that is what makes it pop-up.

The whole other countries banning it deal is basically a non-issue because it was never licensed for legal distribution there anyway. It isn't crossing a line when you ban a game from being sold that isn't legally being distributed there to begin with and the countries in question all have a bad habit of banning titles rather frequently anyway. I mean you have places like Thailand who typically ban any games with excessive sexual content including tons of Japanese eroge titles and Australia who does the same and even banned things like The Witcher 2 for sexual content until the side mission that featured the nudity as an incentive was removed. Places like those are one of the reasons Japanese publishers and developers pretty much just don't distribute outside Japan at all.
As far as being stricter, while I was military, I was talking about the Japanese in general and not their military or the US military (which is who owns Camp Butler). I meant that the people are much more rigid in following the rules no matter how asinine or even if they are purely social standards rather than legal ones. They also tend to turn a blind eye on "criminal activity" or undesirably behaviors and often just pretend like it doesn't even exist as long as it's being done behind close doors. Also rather then "nice" I would call them respectful.
