Because you still not crack it before start game. After install, you must open .iso file, you will see crack folder, copy all files in that folder and paste to your game's dir, enjoy ;)

If you have a graphics error when you start up. A fix that worked for me is creating a Medieval2.preference.cfg file with this text https://pastebin.com/kaw6GeuS . If you still have an error then try to change the screen size to your screen size right now. You can find it under video with the settings battle_resolution and campaign_resolution.
To the people who get "0xa00f4244" or similar error. Here´s the solution.
Reinstall the game.
Copy the steamapi files.
Go to game directory, right click on "medieval2" and click on "add to archive" on winrar. Do the same with the steamapi files.
Play the game.
This is the key point. When you get the error while you trying to launch the game, go to game directory, right click on the files that we add to winrar and click on "extract here". Click on "yes to all" on the next step.
Hello i downloaded and installed the game then i Copy/pasted the files from Crack folder to game directory and when i try to launch medieval2.exe or a DLC from desktop shortcut the game redirects me to steam page. I got the kingdoms.exe and i can launch the game with it but i dont have all factions unlocked and still cannot play the DLC. Any ideas?
I need this help too! When I download this game there is only "kingdoms.exe" and no "medieval2.exe" so when I download 4gb and/or LAA game just doesn't open. If you do have both medieval2.exe and kingdoms.exe, use 4gb patch and LAA on both of them.
can someone drop the download link for steam_api.dll ? Cannot find it in the folder, probably deleted after the virus scanning. (I have tried to download it on dll.files and similar websites but after double clikcing on the launcher, it opens steam rather than the game itself)

For those who downloaded this thinking of playing Third Age mod (you know, the LotR total conversion), the Third Age mod requires kingdoms.exe. Unfortunately for you, there is no kingdoms.exe in this one. Wanna know how to get it to work? I can tell you, for the very, very low price of 'ask'.
Then either your computer can't run Medieval 2 (which is unlikely since the requirements is really low and it can even be run on integrated GPU) or you installed Third Age wrong. If you installed Third Age right, the only thing you need from this is the kingdoms.exe (as well as the entire Medieval 2 files that you have installed) There is no other requirement. I also installed Third Age wrong the first time, and it didn't run, but that's because the dude gave confusing instruction. You need to use the base Third Age AND the latest patch or it will not run at all.
Copy-paste medieval2.exe, you'll get another file called medieval2-copy.exe
Rename medieval2-copy.exe into kingdoms.exe
What you have now are both medieval2.exe and kingdoms.exe in the same folder.
Run Third Age. This is assuming you have already installed Third Age mod. If you didn't install Third Age wrong, this is the only thing left you need to do to play Third Age.

None. Definitive on Steam just means it includes all the expansions. It's a typical game industry thing: "GAME OF THE YEAR EDITION. DEFINITIVE EDITION. DELUXE EDITION. COMPLETE EDITION." and so on.

uhh use power iso mount first volume into new power iso drive then start installing then it wants next volume just mount the second volume in same power iso drive press ok and do same until installation is done should work then copy crack to the game files and launch as admin and done. enjoy the game
For future note: Turn off your anti-virus while unzipping the files. Otherwise exspect either the crack to be deleted, or some files to be corrupt! For people without any experience with technologie: "You can't play the game"

have you found the solution yet ? if not try go to "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\SEGA\Medieval II - Total War" there is the other shortcut for the DLC's
i got a problem i installed it and all works well i can start and play every dlc's but the text like as example if i want to choose a faction the text is weird its unreadable its looks like theres the normal text and many other letters are over it i dont know to explain it better but i tested it and when i go into a game or a battle everything is ok i can play but with these text errors its in my language (german) maybe thats a problem but i googled and found nothing i hopfe somebody can help me ^^

The crack folder is always inside of the first folder when you finish downloading the game and extract it. Just copy the contents of the crack folder to the game directory and voila, your game is cracked.
