Are you using launcher.exe? If so, another user told me after we went back and forth, that if yuo do have STEAM installed, change the name of the executable in steam so there is no conflict.
Yea, I've tried both the launcher.exe and the actual games exe. Also tried running it as admin. Do you mean change the name of the steam.exe? I've tried messing around with some of the config options for smart steam but to no avail.
Yes. Lemme see exactly what he said. I know we narrowed it down when I said I didn't have steam installed on this box and he did. Here it is:

But rather than uninstall it just navigate to your Steam installation directory and change the steam.exe file to steam_.exe. When starting the program it will not activate the steam.exe due to the filename difference. The game will start up without issue. :) Thanks to riffelj for letting me know that he did not have steam installed with his working copy. Would not have solved it without his help. Cheers everyone!
Just found out it's because of Nvidia's latest drivers 378.49. It also effects minecraft. Nvidia released a hotfix to fix it but it has to be installed manually. Not sure the rules on posting links so everyone should just google "minecraft nvidia 378.49 hotfix" since it effects any game run on JAVA
