Just finished it in 30 minutes, I think. Maybe less.
I know that most shmups are very short, but for some reason, it felt shorter than usual.
Maybe cos bosses especially are incredibly short.
If you gathered the right powerups (2 or 3 drones, and some nice homing missiles, for example), you can finish some bosses in a matter of seconds, I'm not kidding you.
Last boss is ok though. The rest doesn't seem that well balanced.
For my first try, I lost two lives... So I'd say it's a good shmup for kids or beginners, and I don't say this as a bad thing.
Althought, I assume that Sky Force Reloaded is a much better choice, if you want to be introduced to shmups.

You can get some persistent power-ups between levels, but none of them felt like a big difference. It felt almost useless.
Like, for example, making your bullets faster, making the enemies bullets slower, etc.
I didn't feel any difference. lol
I'm thinking of a VERY old shmup on Super Famicom, "UN Squadron"...
In this game, you could buy some nice weapons and even better ships between levels, and believe me, it would really change the gameplay. 😁

Also, Forgotten Worlds on Megadrive (or Arcade!!) was incredibly good.

Look at this cute blondie selling you the most murderous weapons in the galaxy. lol
Getting one of these weapons felt like completely changing the game.
Good old times, and one of the most underrated games ever, which desperately needs a sequel.
Anyway, back to Q-Yo. (what is this name anyway? Sounds like what Q from James Bond would be called if he turned into a rapper! Yo, don't mess with the Q, biotch!😆)

Graphics are a mixed bag.
Some animations actually really surprised me cos they looked a bit like "Cuphead", except in pixel art, obviously. lol (the giant gloved hands on some ships)

Speaking of which, the pixel art is good overall... My problem is more about the lack of coherence in level design... Like you start in a bedroom (so your ship is little like a toy?), but then it switches to a forest?
I don't know, maybe I didn't pay attention enough to the backgrounds cos of the frantic action, but somehow, areas seemed disconnected.
lol look at the artwork at the top of this page, cos it represents the game well...
A real mess! ha ha
Just a detail, but...
I have a LOT of experience with shmups, and I think that the developer did a little mistake... The ship and enemies are too big...
I think that such games feel better when the "camera" is set a bit more far from the action... (like in that Progear game I posted below)
When sprites are too big, the screen feels too "busy", even with a few enemies, and you feel like pushing them out to make some room. lol
It feels a bit restricting and frustrating.
As for the music... For some reason, despite liking this style, it made me depressed.
The melodies are kinda "dark" and some of them even feel melancholic, despite the upbeat rhythm.
Old 90s shmups have a much better "feelgood" vibe.
This one is a mix of a childish look with a somewhat darker undertone.
The whole game feels like that. Depends on the people though, so you might love Again, this makes me think of Cuphead... lol
A childish look which actually manages to still feel a bit "evil" somehow...
I find it disturbing... ha ha
Anyway, I can't say I had a bad time at all.
I won't keep it cos there's been much better shmups in history though.
Among horizontal shmups, it doesn't come close to Progear, for example.

Nice comprehensive review. Glad someone else also played UN squadron. The SNES version was better than the arcade release in my opinion.
