I wouldn't say you're retarded. Rhythm is timing. Mother 3 just put Mario RPG's timing based attacks and put them in front of a backdrop of music.

Mother 3 was a rhythm RPG. Really did a good job at it, too. You could stack attacks by timing your button presses to the beat.
