I guess in 2014 the West installed a pro-NATO, pro-West government in Ukraine, and shortly after that Ukraine banned the Russian language, which pissed off the Russian parts of Ukraine, mainly Donbass, Odessa, etc. Kiev began to bomb cities in the Donbass. They were also talking about installing CIA bases right next to Russia and blocking access to the Sevastopol port. It's a huge mess; lots of stuff happened between both sides. Still, I wouldn't exactly say that Russia wasn't provoked. Nevertheless, when you have neighbors like Russia or the USA, countries that want to maintain a sphere of influence around them and have the power to do so, you better learn to at least appease such countries a little bit. A play-both-sides kind of game, like Georgia does. They're still trying to do a Maidan, a color revolution in Georgia, in an attempt to open a second front against Russia, though. The Georgian government hasn't been taking the bait thus far.
