It feels 100% like a 80s shmup, especially in graphics and gameplay department! (the music is, in terms of production value, higher quality than what we had in the 80s, but the melodies feel definitely like they could come from any shmup from this era!) The game feels VERY good and manages to send you back to your childhood more efficiently than most "nostalgic" pixel art games. (check out the recent "Fight'N Rage" too, it's incredible) But that's the problem... I said 80s, not 90s... Which means... When you die, you restart right at the BEGINNING of the level. (I checked in Mame emulator when was the last time I saw this in shmups... and yep, you have to go back to the 80s! Even early 90s shmups got rid of this horrible rule!) And frankly, this is just so annoying that I gave up on this game. (don't "git good" me, cos I can finish the first Dodonpachi with just one continue lol) I'm ok with old gameplay, if it's mixed with some comfortable modern rules... But this is just unacceptable nowadays. I deleted this game... then re-downloaded it... cos well, it's so perfect that I reaaaaally want to like it... lol But I don't know... If the developer updates it, or at least gives us a choice, that's a big thumbs up from me!! Otherwise, it's just a big NOPE. Edit: btw, I realize that making the game behave EXACTLY like a 80s game was precisely the point of the developer though. I'm just saying this is a mistake, imho. I still think it's possible to mix 80s/90s style with SOME modern "mechanics", without damaging too much the nostalgia... Edit #2: nice review of this game => https://www.keengamer.com/article/17076_super-hydorah-review
Just in case anyone reads this: a well planned path can nearly break this game. Every weapon can break certain levels (wide on verminest and lab, mines on moon) some levels are suited to upgrade certain weapons at the right step. I actually felt this was the easiest shmup when played strategically. Also, it is possible to recover from losses by quitting a level from pause screen, but that would be cheating...
totally recommended
