4/5 I am on +4 difficulty right now, and I think I have somewhat of a good understanding of the game now.
It is pretty hard to innovate in a tower defense game. There are only so many ways you can "innovate" in this genre. You can move the hero like in Kingdom Rush; you can move some of the mobile units like Hexguardian; or build your path like Emberward; Or being able to build your economy in more interesting ways, the extreme version of this would be tower factory. If you really stretch the definition of a tower defense into a base defense game, you can also include The Last Spell or Orcs Must Die, or they are billions.
I don't find this game has anything that is specifically unique to it but it has a little bit of everything (besides not having a mobile unit you can move around). Nothing in this game is obnoxious, and the mechanism plays quite well hand-in-hand.
I would say this game is among the better tower defense games out there. This game did not push the envelope forward by having anything innovative. Yes, the game enhances the "roguelike" aspect and increases the replayability. But the core is still a tower defense game.
Still after a few successful rounds, I started to feel tedious. There aren't that many variants in between runs. I cannot pivot my build too much into a pure tall build, I still need to have a little bit of everything.
So, it was a fun game, and a pretty good one in the tower defense genre, but coming from a "rate it amongst all game genre", it does not worth a real 4/5, I think it only worth a high 3/5, but I rounded up because it was indeed quite fun for the first few rounds, but not so much afterward.
Fun game, though replayability is weird - first 10 waves are super easy, first upgrades are shit, so you basically repeat the same thing because real game starts after.
