A very good concept, but horrible implementation. If you don't know how to type in Morse code, you probably won't learn anything from this game. If you actually know how to type in Morse code, the delay in this game is way too much to be enjoyable. I would call myself a Morse code enthusiast. And I have an app called Morse Chat on my phone, and I can chat with people using Morse code pretty comfortably. And I find this game obnoxious.
First, no matter if you know how to type in Morse code or not, change the straight key to iambic key at first instance, you cannot keep up the speed with the straight key in later levels, no matter what. I decreased the latency of both "dot dash" and "input confirm" to the lowest setting, and you still cannot input fast enough in some of the later levels. I'm not used to the iambic key prior to today, but after half an hour, I'm getting used to it, so not that much of a big deal.
But even changing to the iambic key, you still struggle to beat the later stages, not because you can't type fast enough or you type in wrong letters. It's just that you have to wait for the shell to load. And in the later levels, the supply of shells really, really cannot keep up with the speed at which the enemies are appearing, and they have a gunboat which can destroy your mines for what sake? Isn't the game hard enough? You have an enemy type that can very easily destroy one of the "upgrade lines" and render it completely useless.
Yeah. I mean, you can upgrade between reconnaissance, damage, and sea mines, but the reconnaissance is useless because there will be so many enemies appearing on the screen. You don't need the reconnaissance, you can always see where they are by the muzzle flash. Upgrading the sea mines is useless because if there are like three gunboats rushing you, all of your mines will be destroyed very fast (and the fire range of the gunboat is very substantial. You see it appearing on your screen, without you noticing it all your mines are gone. Especially on the later stage, there will be two or three gunboats rushing you at the same time.) The only useful upgrade is the raw damage, so always choose damage upgrades. If you don't roll damage on every single round, you probably can't win, period.
At the beginning, I thought in this game you would be rewarded by input speed and accuracy, but in the end, it's about how often you get rolled damage upgrades.
And if you want to learn morse code from this game, forget about it. You hardly learn anything. You might learn how to type in 12345 in Morse code because that's what you use the most. But if you want to learn how to type in full sentences with Morse code, with punctuation, etc., you really aren't getting anything from this game, so I think this game is a big failure in game design.
