"....Crazy Chicken Hunt) was commissioned by Bochum-based Art Department advertising agency - known for their advergames - and developed by Dutch Witan Studios as an advertisement for Johnnie Walker whisky..."
So are we introducing children to whiskey, or whiskey drunks to wacky driving fun?
The game worked as a digital billboard. You have several references to the brand name. For 1999, it is a good gallery shooter. Probably on par with all the other gallery shooters released at the time.
One offending thing I find about the game is the character model for the Moorhuhn. A moorhuhn is a member of the grouse family. Translates to Lagopus lagopus, willow grouse. The character model for the birds look more like chicken than fowls that you hunt which the game is supposed to represent. Chickens are of the Galliformes family / gallinaceous . This includes chicken/rooster. In spanish, a rooster is called gallo ( same root ). The red tissue on top of a rooster's head is called a comb. It is used only found in members of galliformes. It is used for heat regulation and reproduction purposes. On grouses, the comb is above their eyes like eyebrows. It becomes redder in the mating season ( courtship display ).
A comb is a type of caruncle. Caruncle is : A small, fleshy excrescence that is a normal part of an animal's anatomy. (wiktionnary) Etymology is little flesh [ caro ]. (wiktionnary) Humans have caruncles like lacrimal caruncle.
I know what a grouse looks like. This does not look at all like a grouse, fowl. The Chicken Invaders series was inspired by Moorhuhn. It is developed by a Greek developer and has a better chicken that also looks more like a fowl.
In German, a rooster is Hahn. A hen is Huhn. It is offensive that the developers went for a caricature of a chicken rather than a proper fowl. On the german wikipedia page, it says that the game is inspired by the Glorious Tweltfth, shooting season of grouse that starts in 12th of august. So it is really a grouse that is being represented. In english, different outlets refer this as crazy chicken even if it is a wrong translation. Crazy in german would be a totally different word.
Chicken Invaders series is likely better gameplay wise. For the Moorhuhn, the gallery shooter style games are the best. There are also many clones that can be found that may be noteworthy to look into for history purposes.
It may be nice to look into games by Bally Midway ( Marvin Glass Associates ). Tapper ( Beer Tapper ) has a bazillion clones. It is a predecessor to Dinner Dash. The information is scant on arcade games. The MVA company developed the most successful toys that entered mainstream culture ( Simon Says, Operation ). The operation game is maybe the predecessor of all the avoid the maze type games released on Newgrounds in around 2000-2002.
