Thanks for your mail, J. I have the ISO (Visage + Update 3.04). The problem is, I am just assuming it might come from this. I fiddled around with other stored data, downloaded some updates here and there, so it could be anything... Because I test-installed this Visage game, I quickly blamed it for the hassle that followed, so this needs to be taken with a grain of salt.
Still, I am only ASSUMING there might be something in it. Maybe it's just because I visited another "free games" website and the infection came from there? 🤔 I will never find out. I'll reinstall everything fresh now. Thanks for your help! 👍
BTW, me and my brother played that game last year, no problem. In general, if you still have the iso file, or if you need to experiment, can you help me check if your iso file has the CRC32 code "EFA4A3F0"? If it is not that code, then you definitely downloaded the wrong file.
(PS: I will not hesitate to help you, since you are a long-time member here. If you want me to help check links from other sites, let me know)

Thanks for testing. I actually took the risk and did the same. Yes, the game is clean, as well as the update 3.04. I don't get how to check that CRC something. I tested exactly the ISO and the update that are offered here right now, so yours and mine definitely match and they are indeed clean.
Maybe it was just that I fell victim to a hack attack right during my backup procedure and game updating process, which made me think, the malware had to be in these files.
I never had issues on this site. I don't want to talk too loudly...I also do pay for games. The bigger ones, mostly, when they got cheaper.
I need to move on now and be more vigilant in the future. A VPN is something I should finally get. An additional antivirus other than Windows Defender wasn't necessary in years. Maybe I should overthink that, too.
Firefox + uBlock Origin are my way to go to block pop-ups, which lowers the danger of malware infection to a certain degree, but in today's cybercrime times, a PC obviously needs to be a fortress...
I guess you accidentally downloaded the ads file, and you accidentally clicked on it.
BTW, this version is definitely clean, because almost all other major websites, are also using this version (CODEX version). A rule, is that you should always use the website https://www.srrdb.com/browse/category:pc/order:date-desc/1 when possible. It lists all the releases from SCENE, all of these releases are definitely safe, because SCENE has been around for decades, even older than me, and SCENE releases everything on the internet, including movies, anime, software,... So if they have a virus, that will be the day the pirate world collapses :D. Seriously, I'm not exaggerating, almost everything pirate on the internet today comes from SCENE.
To check the hash, download 7z (it's freeware), I think it's a must have in all PC, I usually install it right after I get a new PC and install windows. You can get the hash of any file this way:
(what is hash? why is it important? you can google about this. I'll just say briefly, to confirm whether the file has been modified or not, or in other words whether the file is original or not, we check hash).
=== Edit: I forgot to mention, you only need VPN and Window Defender, I just use those.
I'm on a secured network, so I can monitor any unusual traffic coming/going on my computer. If the game has a virus, I'll get it first :D. Except for one time IGG admin (the real admin before) got a virus, so far there hasn't been any. And I'm managing a fund provided by IGG admin, which is quite a lot, at least for me, enough to keep the site running for years without any revenue. If my computer gets hacked, it's all gone, and I'll probably go to jail for losing that money, maybe for embezzlement :))
So don't worry, buddy. If you come here, and still see this site exists (and don't see the words "This site hacked by xxx"), then you're safe, and... i'm safe too :D

If it helps, this is the specific game:

Most would answer: "Your data.".
Whatever the case, I am pretty sure, the malware lingered on the external drive or something else happened during some action, that I can't remember.
I didn't click an ad. uBlock Origin was active when I sorted my files two days ago.
Thanks again for your help and background info.
May everyone be safe. 🌠
Still. No words.
