DEMO REVIEW THE BUILD ENGINE IS BACK I'm not making this up, the latest game which had been made with this engine was in the late 90s. (World War II GI, based on the Duke Nukem 3D engine itself, released in 1999) So, besides the obvious countless mods which had been made for Duke Nukem since all that time, we hadn't seen a real full game made with this engine since almost 20 years.๐ฒ And boy, does it look AND feel good... https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/919169700180109765/A2740D746E9F00D6E33013A80D704E1B1B0A5775/ This game feels 100% like the good old Duke Nukem, which I played back in 1997 on Sega Saturn. (didn't even have a computer yet! lol) DUKE NUKEM AND BOMBSHELL ARE A MATCH MAIDEN HEAVEN(not my joke! XD) https://media.giphy.com/media/GQnsaAWZ8ty00/giphy.gif You play a girl named Shelly โBombshellโ Harrison, who is a bomb disposal expert for the Global Defense Force. Apparently, some madman - Jadus Heskel (what kind of name is that? lol) - decides to try conquer the world with his army made of cyborgs. These "cyborgs" kinda look human to me though. And they bleed... Oh well, all I know is... https://i.imgur.com/EXcg2yi.gif ๐ The game sure doesn't spend too much time on the story though. Cos unless I clicked inadvertendly and skipped the intro, I didn't see any explanation, and the game just throws you right away into that huge arena in which everything tries to kill you. Welcome to 90s FPS. My favorites. lol You're free to go WHEREVER you want, and whenever you want. No huge scripts like in modern FPS, and "get back to the area!" warning messages. (ugh...) And you will enjoy wandering around, cos these levels are HUGE, multi-path and very intricate, offering you more secret areas and Easter Eggs than I've ever seen in any Duke Nukem or Doom mod. This is a real joy to explore and it feels very rewarding. And you SHOULD explore, believe me! Because otherwise, you would miss out on a lot of ammo and armor. The game is easy in my opinion, but if you blaze through and skip all of the secret places, you won't survive long. (I nearly died in the very first area lol) TIP: TAKE YOUR TIME. (until you become very good he he) More info about "Bombshell" => "Bombshell was originally the intended sidekick of Duke Nukem in Duke Nukem Forever. The only in-game shots of her appear in the 1998 E3 trailer, where she can be seen with Duke in the mine caves of Nevada hitting switches and avoiding traps, dodging fire from a flying saucer, boarding a drop shuttle, and finally facing Duke head-on. Ultimately she was cut from later trailers and from the final retail product altogether, being replaced by Dylan as Duke's sidekick. " http://dukenukem.wikia.com/wiki/Bombshell FAREWELL TO BALLS So this time, they exchanged the bodybuilder for a sexy "maiden", huh? Oh no, another game hijacked by SJWs and feminists! lol they even chopped Duke's head! => https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/915792000457030860/8FBB910C404D6B229048E5E174CE98CD15B6F97B/ Aaaah these feminists... lol http://www.kalzenere.com/OLD_VERSION/media/k2/items/cache/c10c64c27e0606d1654b81b9bb482558_L.jpg That dog looks so happy.๐ Well, it's the trend since almost a decade now. Even the latest Terminator movie featured women who acted way tougher than men. And not even mentioning the recent Ghostbusters... But I can see clearly that some guys are getting sick of it though. lol I see people on Gamespot getting angry and talking about this aspect of the game only => https://www.gamespot.com/forums/system-wars-314159282/ion-maiden-a-new-build-engine-game-coming-out-in-2-33425918/?page=1 The biggest downside of feminism? This time, you won't get strippers in the game! lol (at least not in these 3 levels I played) But I don't get Chippendales-themed levels either! This isn't fair!๐ข lol Oh well, as a girl, I won't complain, I feel closer to the character when I can play a girl. lol๐ http://geekxgirls.com/images/duke/duke-nukem-cosplay-01.jpg 1996 GAME WITH 2018 PRODUCTION So yeah, like I was saying, this feels exactly like Duke Nukem. A very improved version anyway. The build engine is pushed to its limits, in terms of textures(can we say "textures" for such game, or pixel art? lol) or animation, level design, etc. I have played all of the games build with this engine with no exceptions, and it's the one with the most intricate details I've ever seen. Same for the satisfying and impressive explosion effects, the shooting feeling in general, etc. This is the ultimate build engine game.๐๐ And all of this weighs... 81mb once installed. lol And I'm having more fun than with some FPS which take 20gb. ๐คฃ TURN OFF THE MUSIC As usual, it's a matter of taste, but... I turned it off after 5 minutes. Way too repetitive and annoying. (actually, is there only one track in this game? I'll never know, since I turned it off fast... lol) So I played in Winamp the Sega Saturn version of Duke Nukem OST. And it made the game 200% better.๐๐ธ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXj94P9xyck&list=PLYp9Z64eqqbss0MDIHmBXLajaV3u5Wwn2&index=6 ONLY THREE LEVELS MADE INTO JUST ONE This is a "demo", no matter what the developers say. And I finished it in 2 hours or so, I think. I have been VERY impressed by the fact that they made a big "continuous" world, a la Half-Life. (which is why some people thought there was only one level...lol) This is a great idea, in my opinion. And the game creates a new save every time you reach another "level", so you can replay them whenever you want. Some people have been complaining about the lack of enemies variety, but I feel like there aren't less enemy types that they were in the first Duke Nukem. I'm not sure, but I think I encountered five of them, in the first two levels. WARNING: VERY BAD OPTIMIZATION Now this might depend on the computer specs, I don't know. But I saw in the comments that I wasn't the only one to suffer MAJOR slowdowns, and even a few freezes sometimes. Disabling V-sync actually made it a bit better, but a few areas are borderline unplayable. I think this is the only big problem I encountered while playing.
VERDICT GRAPHICS: 95% The Build engine at its best. And its limit too, maybe? lol Maybe I'm blinded by nostalgia, but it's simply one of the best looking FPS I ever played. You really have to have an open mind to such graphics though. ANIMATION: 82% Enemies dying animations are very well done, but when they just walk around, it feels a bit too "choppy"... Then again, it was the case back in the 90s. he he Weapons are very well animated. MUSIC: 50% Not my style, sorry. Too repetitive and "techno" sounding... I sure respect the fact that apparently, they made the music with a music "tracker? Gee I can't believe this... I make music with a modern DAW and I can tell you, trackers are SO inconvenient... They sure bring me back to the 90s, but they didn't have to, if they wanted to get that particular sound. Using a soundfont of the Roland SC-55 would have been enough. SOUND EFFECTS: 91% Very well done and realistic, they add a lot to the satisfying gunplay feeling. GAMEPLAY : 97% Rewarding exploration and satisfying gunplay in a very rich level design. I couldn't stop and finished the game in just one gaming session.(2-3 hours) I WANT MORE. NOW! TEMPORARY OVERALL RATING ๐ lol : 90% The demo is already very good. Besides some major optimization needed, I can foresee a great future for this game. Of course, this is a niche genre, and most youngsters will completely skip it cos it doesn't have real-life graphics and linear boring gameplay like the Call of Duty series, but us hardcore nostalgic fans will easily consider it one of the best, if not the best "retro FPS", if that's a real genre. lol I hope they'll keep adding as many levels as they can. Edit: From Steam page: "the full game will include 7 exciting Zones, each spanning multiple maps." Since every level has been quite big until now, I guess this is reasonable. And I bet they'll add even more eventually anyway, since the responses have been so positive so far.๐๐ Oh yeah and I want it to be moddable too now. lol
Aaaw well I understand... Cos I haven't upgraded either for years. I was lucky to get a x64 system at that time. I'm kinda worried lately about the crazy raising prices of GPUs.๐ฅ
An "Early Access"-notification would be helpful. Thank god I search on Steam if I find a game here that looks interesting. The features all sounded nice... but yeah, the game isn't finished.
please upload it.

Could run on basically any system
20 year old engine.
Still better than most AAA games right now????
And it needs Dual Core, 64 bit WIn7, and HD Radeon card... Hahaha
sorry for my bad english

Some people have criticized the 20th anniversary edition of Duke Nukem, but if you want an easy and all-in-one solution(not exactly, I think one addon is missing) and not mess with mods and stuff, you'll enjoy it =>
