Ever since some of the developers of small indie games like this started commenting on their games on here asking for people to buy it if they could, I usually avoid pirated indie games.

no need to. some of pirate here only want to test the game and decide if it is worth the support to avoid buying bad game. i.e my experience with new xcom game. if it worh it i will buy it sadly new xcom is shit so i can keep my money.
