Better than peglin, and I personally think it is way better than Balatro (Not sure why Balatro gets so much press, IMO Balatro is extremely mediocre). Die in the Dungeon not yet at Monster Train level of fun but very close to being one of the best rogue-like games to date.
It was a good game since the demo, and even better when the game came out. It's just a good game in general. Trust me, I don't give 5/5 that often.
Things to consider:
Some may argue that each character is not distinct enough. Unlike Monster Train or Slay the Spire, where you have to pivot and try to build your character around a couple of unique mechanisms for that specific character. In this game, you can pretty much make a very similar build for any character and win in a very similar way, resulting in every run being pretty similar. I'm not saying you can't make a very interesting build, but it doesn’t really depend on which character you use, which for a lot of people is a huge negative.
I personally don't mind it that much, as long as the game is fun. I would say the peglin has even less difference between characters but it doesn't stop it from being a good game.
The game does not have a "seed system," so basically, you can SL as many times as you want and break the game. If you don't like your first draw? SL! If you don't like the event you encountered? SL! If a game doesn't have a seed system, it will always make the gameplay easier.
This also results in you not being able to use a seed system to rerun a predetermined scenario because each time you load your game, things will always be different. So I'm not sure if that's intentional or just because the developer didn't design the seed system in mind (Just like Warrior of the Nile 2, the developer specifically said because it is a very small team, they couldn't implement a good seed system or the game would be too complex to code, so they just abandoned the "scenario run" idea).
The power inflation is limited, so you grow in somewhat a linear way instead of fast compounding. The opposite of this would be Vampire Survivor or Warrior of the Nile 2, as "once you have a mature build, you are basically unstoppable." For this game, it's very akin to Slay the Spire; a good build can still lose if you aren't careful. Luckily, this game is not seed-based, so if you do not get a good roll in streaks, you can just SL and try again, and if your build is solid, you shouldn't loose. But still, it is not "no-brainer compounding" hence won't make you feel "Wow, that DPS made me feel nice"
Overall, good game to try out if you have the time, But I'll have to remind you this game is also the addicting type. Discretion is advised.
