You can think it is a much inferior and shallow version of the total war. It kind of reminds me of a game called Hexguardian, but even Hexguardian was a better game than this one.
In some of the roguelike games, I would criticize that there isn't much variation between runs. But this game, there is absolutely no variation between any runs. You play this game once, and then you have already experienced everything this game has to offer; there's almost no "build" or "pivot" at all.
Okay, there are plenty of games that aren't very different between runs, like Red Alert, Aircraft Commander 2 (because this Commander Quest game has a "commander" word in it, reminding me of that game). Being repetitive doesn't mean it is a bad game, if it requires you to strategize your current situation. But for this game, none of those exist.
It's hard for me to pinpoint exactly why this game failed because every single aspect of this game is subpar to the average quality of this genre.
Based on the game's ui design, you can see the developer was clearly developing this game for the mobile market, but even for the mobile market, this game is not good in any way.
If you ever have the chance to play Total War, to control as a real hero, go play that game. Compared to total war, this game is a joke.
Why the hell are you comparing that game to Red Alert or Total War? It's literally Slay the Spire (have effects with the exact same name) but with some AI-controlled units. This game have nothing to do with RTS; What next, FIFA is a RTS??
Just so you know, the game don't even have the "RTS" tag, scroll the page up! Also, there are different strats, you have like 10 archetypes maximum (which isn't a lot, I concede), but offers some variety (Fast units? Defensive with structures? Tanky creatures? Sneaky free placement? Overwhelming numbers of units?)
Flash Games it's actually close to: Bowmaster, The Great War of Prefectures, Age of War or Warfare 1917
Edit: I did some search and I saw the term "Lane-Based Strategy" to refer to this type of gameplay. Like Plants VS Zombies
Please actually play more of the same genre. The gameplay is indeed a light RTS (like you can place your unit behind the enemy line) + 2D autobattler game (Mostly autobattler). You use your card to place units on the left side of the map, and the units will automatically advance and attack the opponent's units. Have you ever played Minion Masters before? This is that exact same game, but with a much worse implementation. There are two types of 2d autobattlers (There also exist 1D autobattlers). One is more of rts like this game. The other one is more of a turn-based game like Dota underlord.
This is not a card game. The way you mention Slay the Spire makes me think you have not played many autobattlers before. I say this game is flat and does not have much variety was coming from comparing it with a similar type from this genre. This game is really not that good. Let's talk with fact and evidence.
I've completed 2 runs, and both win on first try and then I wrote my review. What is your argument? You think this game is amazing? Innovative? Do I not make a fair point to say this is worse implementation than many existing game, like Minion Masters?
At the very least I won't like my own comments to appear strong in an argument, IDK who is trolling.
In FIFA you: - Have 11 units - Have to bring an object into the enemy base - Have a commander (the coach) - Can control any unit and give orders directly or for AI controlled ones
Then FIFA is a RTS! Wow such reasoning! -Literally you.
Dude, comparing this game to Red Alert is the most brain-dead argument I've ever seen. The game combine elements from RTS, that doesn't mean it's an RTS. If I combine RPG elements to Tetris, does Tetris become a RPG? No, it's still a casual game with some RPG mechanics. This game is a Lane-Based Strategy game with some RTS elements; but it's not an RTS.
But again, compare this to bloody Red Alert dude! Red Alert!! At this rate, even the Sims will feel like a RTS to this dude
I'm mentioning Red Alert is only to say a game without variation is not necessarily a bad game if the game require you to strategize beyond what is on your screen, I am not comparing this game's mechanism to Red Alert, I also mentioned Aircraft Commander 2, that is a game with almost identical setup and procedure in between runs, but it was fun.
I DID NOT COMPARE THIS GAME TO RED ALERT IN THE GAME MECHINISM!
