Does the carbon filter, or any aspect of these purifiers, help get rid of mildew smells? I like the idea of the Corsi-Rosenthal box but I wonder if one with a carbon filter will diminish the smell better.

Yes, so carbon is what you need for removing any type of odor, including mildew smells.
You could get a model with just carbon and use it alongside a carbon-free model, such as the Corsi-Rosenthal box.
The
Alen Breathesmart
series has an option with odor filters that includes a decent amount of carbon as well as HEPA.
I have also heard good things about the latest Oransi TrueCarbon series and they do a small, medium and large - but I have yet to test them.
For more odor removal, you need to go for a specialist device like the
AustinAir Healthmate
, but they are not cheap and might be overkill for mildew.
