Isabel, thank you for that useful, concise summary, which I will share on my Greek Liquid Gold Facebook page and website. I have just one question: you wrote, "The price of extra virgin olive oil ranges from more than €300 per 100 liters in Spain, Greece and Portugal, to more than €500 in Italy in 2015. Prices in Croatia and Slovenia are up to 100 percent more expensive." Do you mean Croatian and Slovenian olive oil is 100% more expensive than in Italy? Or than in the first three countries mentioned? Either way, do you know why that would be the case? Wouldn't it make their EVOO harder to sell?

Hi Lisa, thanks for your question! Yes, the average cost of Croatian olive oil is 80 kn/l which comes to 10 Euros, so yes 100% more than in Italy. The reason is because Croatian olive oil is produced by small family farms who use traditional methods and their own olive crop. We know that a lot of olive oil sold in Italy is mixed with oils imported from other countries but as long as it's processed within the country it can be sold as "Made in Italy". Industrial harvesting and production methods can also bring down the selling price. In Croatia, because of the labour intensive nature of producing olive oil, it would be difficult to sell it for less. So does that it make it harder to sell? It probably does, but the quality of the oil is exceptional.

Hi Isabel, thank you for your response. Very interesting information. What really strikes me from where I sit in Crete, Greece, is that the situation here in Greece sounds exactly like the situation in Croatia for the majority of Greek growers--except for the much lower price their labor intensive olive oil brings them. Single estate family farms producing high quality extra virgin olive oil are also very common in Greece, and yet olive oil brings in a much lower price here. Why? --I think that is a huge question for the entire Greek olive oil industry, not only for you.
