One important lesson not mentioned here is to be careful about overreaching. A more measured, incremental approach to enacting pro-life legislation will likely have better chances of success in many (if not most) states.
We should certainly be careful about overplaying our hand, but an amendment that merely rules out a constitutional right to abortion on demand is pretty incremental. As was Montana's referendum on infanticide. On the other hand, every governor and legislature that banned abortion easily won re-election (most by landslide margins).
