Here's an answer I've used:
"Because when I see someone trying to kill my defenseless little sister or brother, I want to do everything I can, short of harming others, to stop it."
The above is not pro-life apologetics. It answers, honestly and to a significant extent, the literal question that was asked. It's a conversation starter. The "But's" that will ensue from the person who asked the question will all relate to the opposing interests involved and not drift the focus entirely away from the unborn. It preempts accusations that my position is religious or moralistic or anti-woman. It keeps everyone's different moral intuitions front and center.
