I might well have at least heard the word abortion before this, but my first memory of awareness was during my college days in the 1960s when someone(s) posted a sign on their dorm door saying: YOU RAPE WE SCRAPE ACME ABORTION SERVICE
I don't know the intent of posting that sign. I do know the college administration made them take it down.
I wasn't aware of any movement related to the issue at the time, and the issue soon faded from my mind. It came to mind again a few years later when I was active in a 24/7 Quaker vigil against the Vietnam War in front of the White House. One vigiler had gone to talk with some folks about nonviolent action against the war and during his trip came across a pro-abortion protest in front of the Papal Legation. He found some cardboard, made a sign, and counter-protested for a while. When he came back, he told us what had happened. It seemed to me that this was the same thing as war and death penalty - killing human beings. We began mentioning the issue in our vigil literature.
I pray for you daily and I than God that you are there in the "trenches" to help clarify what Pro-Life means with meaningful dialogue. Thank you for all you and Equal Rights stand for.
