Followed all steps, but it saves a different file to the usual workflow. It has the suffix .workflow but a different icon, and is not added to the services menu. Please see split pdf icon and merge pdfs icon to see the difference.

When saving it didn't show a pathname, but did save in the Services folder.

Sorry Peter, I need to write an updated post as I believe Automator has been updated since this was published.

OK, thanks. I'll await that. There was a ready-made workflow for this somewhere but I cannot find it. I've got the split PDF which is also useful.

Is there a way to add a bookmark for each file that was merged?
(so that in the new merged pdf you can jump to each file that was merged in)

Hallo, nice tip... but it makes me a little crazy I cannot sort order PDF - it is sorted automatically by "Date Modified/Created". It is possible say to script: First selected file is first page in merged PDF, second selected file is second page in merged PDF etc.?
thanks!

Awesome trick! Very cool! I've been using a bash script to do this, but I like this much better - a lot easier to remember how to use it. Cool!

Can I share this workflow with another mac user by simply sending them the .workflow file that they would then place in the services folder within system library?
