Nice! As a sustainable designer and educator, I'm really happy to see this article. When I have a class, my students are eager to get down to the nitty-gritty details of techniques (such as calculations for water-harvesting earthworks systems). I slow them down and spend at least half an hour on the design technique, starting with the goal (i.e. why you are trying to do whatever it is you want to do).

I agree - I really do think it's so important, not just for the work we do, but for everything in life (acting with intention)

Awesome post, Paul! So true, motivation is the secret to a more productive life. In turn, having a clear "why" statement helps you to always keep up your motivation.

Thanks Camilla. I really think the money I spent doing the Learn Your Why course (which wasn't much) was the best money I ever spent :)

I couldn't agree more! It makes such a huge difference in productivity when you are extremely motivated! I have started projects before that have fizzled out because the "why" was not aligning with what I really wanted. When everything aligns it motivates me to make something faster and makes a better quality result in the end.

Thanks for the comment Amanda! I've come to value this more and more and now it's one of the most important things I look for when starting a new project :)
