My wife and I are about 2 weeks away from starting the same journey of working together.
After a 10-day cross-country trip from San Francisco, CA to Jacksonville, FL in 2016 in a small car, we realized:
  • that we will never run out of things to talk about,
  • we were perfectly fine with silence or just music,
  • we get along famously,
  • and if we ever got the chance to work together, we could and would.
So here we are a couple years later and ready to begin.
I will tell you that we are less concerned about equaling the income from two full-time jobs and more concerned with whether or not we are adding value to the world together. As long as we can cover our bills and save a little for retirement, we are golden.
Thanks for writing this article. I sent it on to my wife with Hayley's 3 points as a starting point for us to set up our rules of engagement. It's a great set of observations, and I appreciate it.

Hi Michael, great to hear you two are about to begin a similar journey, sounds like you are very ready and are going to love it!
All the best for your venture together!

Really glad to see that you two work fine together! So many people talk bad about their spouse, but we also hang out like 24/7 and are still in love like on the first day. Just stay interested in each other and keep up random acts of surprise :)
Also, interesting point that she needs to add value, something I’ll give a thought. For me, my wife has no clue about software development but perhaps she can expand my social reach, FB ads or something like this...
Thanks again, always enjoy your thoughts! Make sure to plan a trip to Germany somewhen in the future!

Nice to hear you have a great relationship. And it sounds like there's definitely something she could work on to add value for you. Have a brainstorm!
Cheers,
