OTUMFOƆ is in a unique position to really make a difference in this existential journey. It may be true that most of the local chiefs may themselves not be involved in the galamsay, it is their acquiescence which has contributed to the scale of the menace we see. Are they geuinely ''afraid'' of permit-holding prospectors/miners from Minerals Commission or do they ''discreetly'' embrace the handshake from operators?
Whatever may be the reasons why local chiefs have allowed the tragedy to continue this far, now that Otumfoɔ has stepped in with his big sandals - as we say in Twi - every local chief is strong enough to resist the threat from politicians and officials, and challenged to stay clean for fear of losing their job since failure to protect the patrimony will be interpreted as being unfit for the job.
Indeed, Otumfoɔ must thoroughly investigate allegations and suspicion of chiefs neck deep in galamsay and make a public example of discipline of their conduct. With that, everyone involved in galamsay will stop. IF OUR CHIEFS ARE AGAINST GALAMSAY, NO POLITICIAN (NO MATTER HOW STUPID AND GREEDY THEY MAY BE) CAN DEFY THE CHIEFS. And so much less may be said about minerals commission officials.
With Otumfoɔ's success, government can then use it as a blueprint for the fight in the other regions.
After all, it is reported that Dormahene has banned it in his jurisdiction with admirable success. So, if it can be done in Dormaa, why can't it succeed everywhere else there is a chief?
Shall we all pray for Otumfoɔ's success in this endeavour. His success will herald the end of this tragedy befalling this beautiful nation. God save Ghana our motherland.
